A Modern Review of the History of the Stag Beetle Lucanus cervus Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) in Great Britain

A 45 page A4 booklet, ISBN 0948723575, also available on CD Rom, entitled A Modern Review of the History of the Stag Beetle Lucanus cervus Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) in Great Britain, has been produced. The centuries-long history and fluctuating territorial status of L. cervus L. is reviewed, together with those of each county and in the nation’s four great macro-colonies. Every available record is represented on a series of carefully-tailored date-classed national distribution and local range maps down to the definition of a two-kilometre grid square. In addition, details of all sightings made away from the insect’s main headquarters are textually collated and referenced. Past research is critically considered, the reasons for distribution patterns and changes in local range are determined, the sources of rogue records are examined, and the prospects for future conservation briefly assessed.
